FIREGEL SYSTEMS
BARRICADE II GEL AND HOMEOWNER PREPAREDNESS

Homeowners in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) can have better piece-of-mind and a better chance of saving their home from wild fire if they have Barricade II gel on hand.  Barricade II gel can be applied with a garden hose with limited instruction by any able-bodied person.    Barricade II is a product that is applied when wild fire is imminent and may reach your neighborhood within 24 hours.   If you have an hour or so before safe evacuation, you may have time to apply Barricade.   Do not apply Barricade if Responders have given an immediate evacuation notice, or if fire is close and smoke is coming directly toward you.  Place the Barricade kit(s) on your driveway for possible use by fire fighters.  If you do have time to spray Barricade, place the empty bottles at the entrance to your driveway so that fire fighters will know your house has been “gelled”.

A Barricade II Home Kit consists of four 1-gallon bottles of gel concentrate, an applicator that attaches to a garden hose, and an instructional DVD.  Barricade gel is intended to be used in conjunction with other essential fire safe practices such as thinning of vegetation, creating a zoned 100 foot defensible space perimeter around structures, cleaning debris from under decks, cleaning rain gutters etc. Consult with local fire officials or search governmental websites for wild fire safety tips and recommendations.

The average 2 to 3 bedroom home needs two Home Protection Kits. Kits are $326.00 each plus tax and $25.00 FL to CA shipping.  Larger homes or those with additional structures to be protected such as decks, gazebos, fences, out buildings, barns, foliage near the home etc., will need more than two kits.  If a property requires more than two Home Kits for any one property, the additional kits can be purchased as gel concentrate only without additional applicator nozzles at a $70.00 savings per kit (see price list).

Priority areas for spraying Barricade gel are all wood trim, wood siding, windows, doors, eaves, roof-fascia interface, wood decks, wood fences and shrubs closer than 15 feet to the residence, etc.  Some people elect to not spray stucco if there is nothing nearby (like an adjacent home or tree) that could burn and create radiant heat or embers.    A site visit by an experienced gel technician is best to help the homeowner decide on the quantity of gel concentrate needed and whether any special equipment in needed to properly apply the gel.  An alternative is to take digital pictures of the residence and property from at least 4 directions and attach them to an email for use during a phone conference with Firegel Systems personnel.  For site visits or phone conferences contact Firegel Systems at (619) 468-3466 or (619) 985-0178, or email at: tlamb77@nethere.com <mailto:tlamb77@nethere.com> .

A suggested option for larger homes, or homes with a swimming pool or water storage tank, is the purchase a portable gasoline powered fire fighting pump for use in applying gel faster, fire suppression, and general water transfer use.  Several pump models and custom systems are prepared for sale by Firegel Systems.  With a good water supply, the homeowner can have an easy-to-use, but powerful gelling system as used by professional fire fighters.  Contact Firegel Systems for more information on portable pump systems.

All pumps come equipped a 20 foot suction hose, a manifold to accept high pressure contractor hose and 1.5 or 1.0 inch fire hose.  One hundred feet of contractor hose and fire hose is included as well as a fire nozzle.  Pump kits range in price from $1400.00 to $3500.00.
Black, green, or brown Poly tanks from 300 to 5,000 gallons are also available.  Other items carried by Firegel Systems for immediate delivery are fire hose, heavy duty contractor (garden) hose, nozzles, hydrant adapters, and various fittings and adapters for changing size and thread type in hose and pipe.
